Day 3 of our 2015 Pacific Northwest road trip took us to Tacoma, Washington’s third largest city (after Seattle and Spokane). My personal highlight of our half-day visit was the garden of Peter Herpst, the Outlaw Gardener. Peter was gracious enough to show me around even though I hadn’t given him much advance notice.

Peter’s picture-perfect Victorian, complete with the most densely planted hellstrip I’ve ever seen

Having followed Peter’s blog for years, I had a good idea of what his garden was like (I thought), but in reality it was even more fantastic. It’s a lush maze full of amazing plants, meandering paths, and quirky art pieces. I never knew what to expect around the next corner. I love this sense of adventure and discovery—something I think you only get to experience in somebody else’s garden because you know your own too well.

I was so enthralled with the Outlaw Garden, I didn’t want to leave. I took over 100 photos in record time and will have at least one detailed post in the weeks to come. For now, I hope you’ll enjoy these collages.

After visiting Peter, I headed downtown to meet up with my family. We then walked across the Chihuly Bridge of Glass to the Museum of Glass. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to see the exhibits, but I loved the architecture of the museum, designed by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. I hope to experience the Museum at night on my next visit!
